Common Causes of Gastritis (And What I Learned the Hard Way)
When I first heard the word “gastritis,” I thought it just meant bad stomach pain. But after going through weeks of burning discomfort, bloating, and that constant heavy feeling after meals, I realized it’s much more specific than that.
Gastritis simply means inflammation of the stomach lining. But the causes behind that inflammation can vary a lot — and understanding them is the first step toward real recovery.
In this guide, I’ll explain the most common causes of gastritis in clear language and share what I personally learned while dealing with it.
What Is Gastritis?
Gastritis happens when the protective lining of your stomach becomes irritated or inflamed. That lining normally protects your stomach from its own acid. When it weakens, acid can irritate the tissue underneath — and that’s when symptoms begin.
Common symptoms include:
- Burning or gnawing pain in the upper abdomen
- Nausea
- Feeling full quickly
- Bloating
- Loss of appetite

1. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) Infection
One of the most common causes of gastritis is a bacterial infection called H. pylori. This bacteria can live in the stomach lining for years without symptoms, but over time it can damage the protective barrier and trigger inflammation.
Doctors usually detect it through:
- Breath tests
- Stool tests
- Blood tests
- Endoscopy
Untreated H. pylori can increase the risk of ulcers and, rarely, stomach cancer.
2. Long-Term Use of NSAIDs (Pain Relievers)
Regular use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen can gradually weaken the stomach lining.
These medications reduce protective prostaglandins, making it easier for stomach acid to irritate tissue.
3. Excessive Alcohol Consumption
Alcohol directly irritates the stomach lining. Frequent drinking can lead to chronic irritation, and heavy intake may trigger acute gastritis with severe burning pain and nausea.
4. Chronic Stress
Severe physical stress (surgery, trauma, illness) can reduce blood flow to the stomach lining. Ongoing psychological stress may also worsen inflammation indirectly by increasing acid production.
5. Autoimmune Gastritis
In rare cases, the immune system mistakenly attacks stomach lining cells. This can reduce vitamin B12 absorption and lead to anemia over time.
6. Acid Imbalance and Lifestyle Factors
- Skipping meals
- Large late-night meals
- Excess caffeine
- Smoking
- Highly acidic or spicy foods
Individually these may not cause gastritis, but combined over time they can weaken stomach defenses.
Acute vs. Chronic Gastritis
Acute Gastritis
- Sudden onset
- Often linked to alcohol, NSAIDs, or infection
- Intense but short-term symptoms
Chronic Gastritis
- Develops slowly
- Often linked to H. pylori or autoimmune causes
- Milder but persistent symptoms
When Should You See a Doctor?
- Vomiting blood
- Black stools
- Severe abdominal pain
- Unintentional weight loss
- Symptoms lasting more than a few weeks
Final Thoughts
Gastritis is common, especially among adults with stress, irregular meals, alcohol use, or frequent pain reliever use. The good news is that once the cause is identified, most cases are manageable.
The key is identifying the trigger — not just treating symptoms.
